It’s clear that one holiday each person goes where he goes: love, tavern, juke joint, cinema. But don’t judge it unworthy the old, slightly shabby, shooting gallery of mine. Ten shots, a hundred lira, the “Universal” shooting gallery. Ten centers to hit for a rich final prize. Many types of targets: puppets, pipe smokers, old generals, producers and admirals, authors and businessmen. There’s an abbot and a chamberlain, an advisor and His Majesty alongside, an adept, a cabinet head, so many fine balloons of every quality. There’s the strongman's procurer, the mistress of an industrialist, an intransigent censor, and a homosexual prince. It’s clear that, if it pleases you, each person goes where he goes: love, the ballroom, the soccer match, or the cinema. But if you prefer to test your talent, there’s my shooting gallery. Up, shoot, citizens, on the foolish servant and on the protector, on the child trafficker, on the hangman and on the dictator, on the cops and on the bigwigs, on the church-coziers and altar-lickers, on the fascists and on the scoundrels, and on the captains of business. Ten hits, up, good people, shoot and see them jumping old pipe smokers, big balloons empty of nitrogen, and on all that wreckage you’ll see that it will vanish, the phantasm of hunger. And this will be my prize. English translation © 2021 Dennis Criteser "Cantacronache ben temperato" was the eighth 4-song Cantacronache EP on the Italia Canta label, released in 1961. I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
