The lyrics above match the live version below. The original studio recording had three additional verses, which were edited and refined for the live version of Gaber's 1984-1985 tour. |
Welcome, the place where, where everything is irony, the place where there’s life and various kinds of happiness, where one is born, where one lives smiling, where one suffers without blaming the world. Welcome, the place of confusions, where things never add up but you don’t fear the contradictions. Welcome, the life that counts only on itself. Welcome, the place where so many people together don’t crowd up. Welcome, the place where one takes nothing seriously, where maybe there’s the superfluous and not the necessary, the place where feeling is more important, where, despite the ignorance, everything is intelligent. Welcome, the place where, if one of your thoughts finds company, probably it’s already time to reconsider, where Fascism and communism are old nicknames for the elderly, where not even fortune-tellers think of tomorrow. Welcome, the place where everything is calculated and nothing works, and to come to an agreement one steals honestly, where there's no great love for the State - one believes little in it - and the desire to feel alone is so ancient. Welcome, the place where, maybe by chance or maybe by luck, it seems that it’s dying and then it never dies, not even the Lagoon. A place full of strange dialects, of feelings almost unrecognized, where the poets are all born in Recanati. Welcome, the place long and narrow with around it the sea, full of regions like they should all be nations, perhaps a little so as not to die, a little in jest . . . a place absurd as this seems, precisely, Italy. The album marks a new, more modern sound, including the use of the Fairlight synthesizer, played by Mark Harris, who arranged the music on the album. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
