L'America - America

(citazione "O.K. Corral")
E secondo me ci influisce, non è mica uno scalmanato qualsiasi, dio. Ci influisce. E il diavolo si incazza. Stupido, prende sempre i cavalli cattivi!...
E l'Europa, con le sue lucine colorate, i suoi fiumi, le sue tradizioni, i violini, i valzer...

(citazione bolgie-woogie)
E poi luci, e neon, e colori, e vita... e poi ponti, autostrade, grattacieli, aerei... Chewingum!...

(citazione "Strangers in the night")
La cultura non li ha mai intaccati. Volutamente. Come cagare.

(citazione "Tutti frutti")
A me l'America non fa niente bene... Oeh!...

(citazione "We shall over come")

All of the Americans have taught us, if there weren’t Americans . . . at this time we were Europeans, old, heavy, always thoughtful, with grey suits and taxis still black.

There isn’t a people full of new inspirations like the Americans. And generous, the Americans never take. They give . . . they give.
There isn’t a people better than the Americans. The Germans are bad. This is why wars end poorly for them! . . . But they never stand still, they try again. They have the devil that pushes them: come on . . . come on! . . . Instead, God roots for the Americans. And I think he influences us, he’s not just any old rowdy, God. He influences us. And the devil gets pissed off. Stupid, he always takes the bad horses! . . . Right, but it can’t hold for the Americans. For them, the wars are a mission. They never did them to take, but no, to give! There’s always a prize for whoever loses the war: It’s almost worth it: “Congratulations, you have won again! . . .” And down a truckload of coffee! For them, it’s enough to give.
One time the invaders took everything of the defeated populace: women, religion, science, culture . . . Them, no. They’re incapable. One wins the war, conquers Europe, and finds there a Liberty lamp . . . what goes? The sacking is admitted . . . they make it their own. Noooo!
They civilize. It’s a passion . . . and they put there a quartz one: all white. And Europe, with its little colored lights, its rivers, its traditions, the violins, the waltzes . . .

(background music: boogie-woogie)
And then light, and neon, and colors, and life . . . and then bridges, freeways, skyscrapers, airplanes . . . Chewing gum! . . . There isn’t a people more stupid than the Americans!

(background music: “Strangers in the Night”)
Culture never affected them. Purposefully. Yes, because they’re right to be wary of our culture, old, elaborate, contorted. Certainly, more simplicity, more immediacy . . . They create like this. How to shit.

(background music: “Tutti Frutti”)
There isn’t a people more creative than the Americans. Every year they throw you a film, nice even, beautiful. But woe if it’s missing that minimum of necessary superficiality. Under it all there’s always the Western. Even in the mental hospitals they manage to put the Indians. And this is the consistency.
The Americans have clear ideas on the good and the bad. Clear as can be, not in theory . . . in experience. They are the good ones! And they bequeath you ideas, boxes of cigars, cases of whiskey, ships, soap, freedom, computers, used suits, sharks . . .
To me, America does nothing well . . . Too much freedom, I need to tell it to the doctor. To me, America makes come to me the desire for a dictator. Woh! . . . [he gets upset with himself and slaps himself] Yes, a dictator. At least one sees, one recognizes.
I’ve never seen something that erodes the individual like that freedom there. Not even a malady eats you so well from inside, how brilliant the Americans are!

(background music: “We Shall Overcome”)
They put it there for you, freedom is within everyone’s reach, like the guitar. Each one plays as he wishes and everyone plays as freedom wishes.

Libertà obligatoria (Obligatory Freedom) is a live double album that collects the songs and monologues of Gaber's 1976-1977 theater season. The overarching question hovering over this collection of material is whether we are free or obligated to be free. Another theme is the relationship between a person and his/her body. To Gaber and Luporini, the capitalist system had lodged so deeply into life as to modify an individual's awareness of their own body and needs.
