Dance, dance, ballerino, all night and in the morning, don’t stop. Dance on a table between two mountains, and if you dance on the waves of the seas, I’ll come watch you. Grab the sky with your hands, fly higher than the airplanes, don’t stop. The years are few, maybe only days, and they’re all ending fast and in a line, there isn’t one of them that’s returning. Dance, don’t be afraid. If the night is cold and dark, don’t think of the pistol you pointed against it, dance in the light of a thousand cigarettes and of a moon that lights you up like daytime. Dance the mystery of this world that burns up in a hurry. That which yesterday was true, trust me, won’t be true tomorrow. Stop, with those hands of yours, the Palermo-Frankfurt train. For my emotion: there’s a boy in the window, his green eyes that seem made of glass – run and stop that train, make it turn around. Dance also for all the violent ones, quick of hand and with knives, yikes! If they understood, seeing you dance, they were dead from the beginning, even if they can breathe. Fly and dance on the sick heart, disillusioned, defeated, then abandoned, without love, of the man who mistakes the moon for the sun without having knives in his hand, but in his poor heart. Then come, blessed angel, try and put your feet on your breast and wear yourself out dancing to the rhythm of a motor and to the great words of a song, a song of love. Here’s the mystery: Under a sky of iron, of chalk, the man is able to love all the same, and he loves truly, without any certainty. What emotion, what tenderness. I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
