Anna, as are many Annas, touchy. Anna, beautiful look, a look that every day loses something. If she closes her eyes, she knows it. Star of the suburbs, Anna with her friends, Anna who would like to get out. Marco big shoes and little meat. Marco heart in alarm, with his mother, a sister, small life, always that. If he closes his eyes, he knows it. Wolf of the suburbs, Marco with the pack, Marco who would like to get out. And the moon is a ball and the sky is a billiard, so many stars in the pinball machines, they are more than a billion. Marco inside a bar, he doesn’t know what he’ll do. Then there’s someone who finds a scooter, one can go into the city. Anna, beautiful look, doesn’t waste a dance, Marco who at dancing seems like a horse, in a club that’s a dump. A few people who watch them, there’s a queer one who roots them on. But you tell me where might, where is the road to the stars? While they dance, they look at each other and exchange skin. And they start to fly, with three jumps they’re outside the club. With an air of American comedy, this week is also ending. But America is far away from the other part of the Moon that watches them, and even if it laughs to see her almost afraid. And the Moon in silence now approaches with a bunch of stars, it falls on the street. Moon that walks, Moon of the city. Then a dog passes who hears something. He watches them, barks, and then goes away. Anna would like to have died. Marco wanted to go far away. Someone saw them returning, holding hands. I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
