In southern Italy, "ti ti ti ti" is the sound you might make when feeding the chickens. Imagine politicians feeding their populace falsehoods and promises eagerly eaten. |
To you who dream of a star and a sailing ship that carry you to islands of truer sky, to you who can’t stand patience or abandon yourselves to the most unbridled restraint, to you who designed an alarm system, to you who always struggle against the wall and when your mind takes flight, you realize that you are left alone; to you who listen to my record, smiling perhaps, I promise that the same anger, I am living. We are on the same boat, you and I. Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti To you who hate greasy politicians who minimize their crimes, disposed to fuck everything up just to save their worldly dignity, to you who don’t love the party servants who ask for your vote, a clean vote, they all depart incendiary and proud, but when they arrive they’re all firemen; to you who listen to my record, smiling perhaps, I promise that the same anger, I am living. We are on the same boat, you and I. Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti Ti ti ti ti, ti ti ti ti ti ti English translation © 2023 Dennis Criteser E io ci sto (And I'll Be There - as in, "you can count on me") was Gaetano's sixth and final studio album, released in 1980. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
