Dove stai? Fatti sempre i fatti tuoi Di chi sei? Dove stai? Fatti sempre i fatti tuoi Di chi sei? Il dottore non c'è mai Gianna © 1978 Rino Gaetano The popularity and stature of the Sanremo Music Festival had been declining for some years, becoming less and less reflective of the changing pop music culture in Italy. For the 28th edition in 1978, they decided to invite, among others, Rino Gaetano. He was hesitant to attend, but his record company encouraged him to go. He wanted to present "Nuntereggae più" but his label once again weighed in and encouraged him to present "Gianna," a song whose political references were more veiled, couched in a catchy, innocent-sounding musical arrangement. The song placed third in the general classification and first in the singer/songwriter category. The televised exposure led to the song being a huge hit and drove significant album sales. As is always the case, there are multiple interpretations of the lyrics. According to some, it describes freemasonry and Italian politics. Others say it refers to the 1953 homicide of Wilma Montesi, while still others say the protagonist is a trans woman in the age of sexual liberation, or even that she could be any of us, immersed in our own ideas and illusions, following our own pleasures and opportunities. One fact remains as a marker of the loosening more's in Italy - "Gianna" was the first song ever performed at Sanremo that had the word "sex" in the lyric. |
Gianna, Gianna, Gianna maintained theses and illusions. Gianna, Gianna, Gianna promised walls and rivers. Gianna, Gianna, had a crocodile and a doctor. Gianna didn’t lose even a minute to make love. But the night, the party is over, long live life. The people undress, a world begins, a different world, but made of sex, whoever will live will see. Gianna, Gianna, Gianna didn’t search for her Pygmalion. Gianna defended her salary from inflation. Gianna, Gianna, Gianna didn’t believe in songs or in UFOs. Gianna had an exceptional nose for truffles. But the night, the party is over, long live life. The people undress, a world begins, a different world, but made of sex, whoever will live will see. But where you goin’? Come here, but what’re you doing? Where you goin’? Who’re you mad at? Come here, but what’re you doing? Where you goin’? Who’re you mad at? Who are you? But what do you want? Where you going? Who are you mad at? Throw it out, come here, who takes it and who gives it. Where are you? Where are you? Mind your own business. Who are you? But what do you want? There’s never a doctor. Take and go, but what’re you doing? Don't take if you don't give. Come here, but what're you doing? Where you goin’? Who are you mad at? Who are you? But what do you want? Where you goin’? Who are you mad at? Throw it out, come here, who takes it and who gives it. Where are you? Where are you? Mind your own business. Who are you? But what do you want? There’s never a doctor. Take and go, but what’re you doing? Don’t take if you don’t give. Come here, but what’re you doing? Where you going? Who are you mad at? Who are you? But what do you want? Where you going? Who are you mad at? Throw it out, come here, who takes it and who gives it. Where are you? where are you? Mind your own business. Who are you? But what do you want? There’s never a doctor. English translation © 2023 Dennis Criteser Nuntereggae più was Gaetano's fourth album, released in 1978. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
