From this came the idea of doing an entire album of songs based on works of art. |
Before calling Van Gogh crazy, know that he’s terrace, you’re ground floor. Before saying he was out of his mind, draw me a picture with sheets of paper and crayons. Van Gogh, not just any old guy, but someone who at your age, books by Emile Zola, Shakespeare in his veins, Dickens in his veins; you, you read DVD recorder manuals. He, three hundred letters, fine writing; you, a hundred sixty characters, two emoji, the end. He, London, Paris, Anvers; you, megastore, Iper markets, multiplex. He, far away but knows everything about his brother Theo; you, you live with and know nothing about your brother. He, walking in the fields, it inspires him; you, shut in with cramps on the treadmill. Well, from an initial estimate, my dear lad, you must agree that you are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh, not Van Gogh, not at all, Van Gogh x3 You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh, Van Gogh. At sixteen years old, he toured art collections; you at sixteen, Yu-gi-oh, you collect trading cards. At twenty years old, in the Salon of the Louvre; and you in the SUV showroom, you're in underwear. He, oil on canvas and created paintings; you, oil on muscles, and bodybuilding competitions. He, peasants, models, prostitutes; you spend the night in bed with the computer. He’s talented, you know; you, it’s been a while since you had it. He bets on himself; you, online poker. He, feeling high from having met Gauguin; you, feeling high from having snorted cocaine. He, absinthe and poetry; you, absence of poetry. He has faith, you feel you’re the Messiah. Van Gogh, a blade and he cuts his ear off; I hear you talk, I’m about to do the same. I’ve got the razor between my fingers but I won’t kill you, I’ll have mercy on you because you are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh, not Van Gogh, not at all, Van Gogh. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. . . . you smash everything when they score a goal, you get in line for a smartphone . . . You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. OK, Van Gogh ate tubes of paint and other weird stuff probably less toxic than your cheeseburger. Hallucinations that alter the vision, you do mushrooms in Amsterdam but that doesn’t make you an artist. You, obsessed with your cell phone; he, obsessed with sunflowers. Going around with you is a bit like going around alone, sleight of hand shifts the wind like in “Go Fish.” There’s news, kid, you’re no longer sane. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh, not at all, Van Gogh … etc. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. You are crazy; not at all, Van Gogh. I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
