A great example of Caparezza's word play is the line "Prego per avere grazie, l'opposto dei galatei." "I pray to have graces, the opposite of the courtesies." A common everyday courtesy is for one person to say "grazie" (thanks) and the other person to say "prego" (the equivalent of "you're welcome"); so saying "you're welcome" to have someone say "thank you" is a reversal, or the opposite, of the usual expression of courtesy. Another example is in the line that references the journalist Tiziano Terzani, whose last work was Un altro giro di giostra (One More Ride on the Carousel), which becomes "altro che un giro di giostra" - "other than a ride on a carousel." |
Rabbi, Pope, Lama, Imam Bible, Dharma, Surah, Torah Bread, Wine, Kosher, Halal Yom Kippur, Lent, Ramadan Rabbi, Pope, Lama, Imam Bible, Dharma, Surah, Torah Bread, Wine, Kosher, Halal Yom Kippur, Lent, Ramadan Hello boys, the show takes off, spiritual like Osho with the Rolls Royces. Money circulates, sketchy like the offshore. Don’t know about you, I’m gonna make me a religion like Tolstoy. Even skeptics search for an answer if there’s paradise and someone proves it. Dear Tiziano, other than a ride on the carousel there’ll be a chug of a shot, à la Jonestown ritual. Maybe it’s age, but I want a cult to observe, to be free to deprive myself of my freedom, that then they say: “You live poorly, you live poorly, for you it takes a minister of the interior, not that one of the Interior Ministry, Interior Ministry. I’d like to pass for a spiritual type, how to do it? (I follow all the religions, all the religions.) I pray to have graces, the opposite of courtesies. With the divine in symbiosis I change wine to cirrhosis at the wedding of the Canaanites. In the religious courts with Peter’s flock, I beat myself with nails and splinters of glass. Murderous my relation with people of faith – GG Allin by comparison is more innocent than a fetus. Under the minaret, face the carpet, Apollo Creed. In Jamaica, I believe, I get a dreadlock, roll some weed. At the Wailing Wall with the volume in hand, I oscillate like Guetta with my hand on the volume of the gear. Then Buddha says that hell is within, it might be true, the effect of a habanero must have kicked in. I envy the Indian who venerated the airplane, at least it parachuted supplies from the sky. Rabbi, Pope, Lama, Imam Bible, Dharma, Surah, Torah Bread, Wine, Kosher, Halal Yom Kippur, Lent, Ramadan Rabbi, Pope, Lama, Imam Bible, Dharma, Surah, Torah Bread, Wine, Kosher, Halal Yom Kippur, Lent, Ramadan I pass into meditation but it doesn’t last long. I am by nature nervous, the type of man who recites the Lotus Sutra then afterwards is thrown into emptiness. I’d like to reach nirvana like them, ditto, reach the Nirvana, not their leader. As unfaithful as y’all, but I swear I’m gentle, even if I seem a rock with a Dolomites heart. It’s a spiritual need to fill, to fill, to fill. It blends in like a bit of water in the sea, water in the sea, water in the sea. I have a spiritual need to fill, to fill, to fill. It grew out of the depression that he experienced as a result of the onset of tinnitus in 2015; Caparezza here is a prisoner of his own mind. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
