O Mark– o Bee– La scelta © 2021 Caparezza "La scelta" contrasts the life choices made by Beethoven and Mark Hollis of the English band Talk Talk. |
As a grown-up I’ll play the “Pastoral,” now over the piano I sit curved like a bishop’s staff. My father’s mood is a little grey, he wants me to be a prodigy. But I’m only a kid, and he was disgruntled. Father, leave the alcohol alone, you ruin yourself You are strict when I do trainings. I am romantic, but you just see me only like a bunch of florins. I am Ludwig, cultured, mythic, women avoid me as if I had typhoid. Too many worries, at 30 I lost my hearing. You talk to me and you seem to me like a fucking mime. If we set my life on this plane, it makes sense, if we set it on this piano. So I’ll take the stool and leave the rope, I sing “Ode to Joy” because I see the abyss, but over this I glide. I write a thousand letters, I make noise, I struggle with silence, but I make do. I have my music; I leave love aside. I’ll be immortal; my lover, no. And I’m happy with the choice I made, not even one remorse, nor even one regret. Yes, I’m happy, what a beautiful discovery, nothing more is needed than to make a choice. Pathetique, Eroica, Pathetique, Eroica, Pathetique, Eroica, this is my life, don’t forget it. Pathetique, Eroica, Pathetique, Eroica, Pathetique, Eroica, this is my life, don’t forget it. This is my life, don’t forget it. My name is Mark, I feel the cool of the reflectors. I’d like to remain outside of it, but the world wants me to go on tour. I enter the charts because fame is blind, so blind that it basically no longer concerns me. It’s a good job, a lot of proceeds, it counts as a gold record in a coffin. I want to gaze at my son, time passes and I realize that I’m gazing at a sheet of parchment paper. Hey, I’m Mark, new romantic, under the stage I disappear, “puff” like talcum powder. What trouble, they burn my contract, ‘cause the sound is gloomy, rarefied. I prepared a fast retreat. My family is more important than a riff, and these talk, talk, while I am mending life with a thread of voice. And I don’t leave letters, no sound, I love my silence and you don’t understand how much. Thanks for the applause, but I chose love. This is my life, don’t forget it. Either continue the chords or game over, watch the world sober or hung over. I tell myself, played, the joker, where to? Either Mark- or Bee- Home and family or songs and rehearsals, either with the children or among the cornets and violas. I tell myself, played, the joker, where to? Either Mark- or Bee- English translation © 2021 Dennis Criteser Exuvia is Caparezza's eighth album, released in 2021. The songs on the album focus on the escape from the mental prison that Caparezza detailed in his previous album Prisoner 709. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
