'68? Eh... Sesso in tutto? Eeeeeeeh! '68? Eh... Sesso in tutto? Eeeeeeeh! '68? Eh... Sesso in tutto? Eeeeeeeh! '68? Eh... Sesso in tutto? Eeeeeeeh! Sesso in tutto? '68? Sesso in tutto? Comunque io mi chiamo Caparezza Ah, io mi chiamo Ilaria... (Ilaria, Ilaria...) La rivoluzione del sessintutto © 2008 Caparezza "La rivoluzione del sessintutto" kicks off the album/novel with Caparezza and Ilaria meeting each other. There's a play on words in the title - 68 is "sessantotto" in Italian, while the made-up contraction "sessintutto" means "sex in everything." |
We’ll update you on the condition of the panda cub in the next edition, but let’s talk about music: as you know, forty years have passed since the cultural revolution of ’68; among the various artists who are annoying us with this topic Caparezza could not be left out. The Apulian singer/songwriter is, in fact, giving a concert to celebrate this crackling anniversary. Let’s go live, then, on the air onstage. Forty years ago, Jimi Hendrix brought the revolution to Italy with a small series of concerts. It was 1968. To celebrate this anniversary, I’ll put on a Stratocaster. 1-9-6-8, groupies in the bands, naked breasts on Electric Ladyland, Jimi Hendrix is ginseng, God’s name is Zappa Frank Vincent. In Chicago at the Plaster Casters I can make myself a cast of the lower parts. Discs of meat from the master speakers, while in the 2000s what passes is Casper. In the raves, rasta and pasties, from the ghetto blasters, gangster rap. Black bloc fire on Blockbuster, are we Black Panthers or Ghostbusters? War masters with Panzers, heroes, but with Pampers. The revolutions disappeared, I only see porn photos going around. How many believe in ‘68 and how many see sex in everything? How many believe in ‘68 and how many see sex in everything? ’68? Eh . . . Sex in everything? Eeeeeeeh! How many believe in ‘68 and how many see sex in everything? ’68? Eh . . . Sex in everything? Eeeeeeeh! You, basically, at school are a sewer, you’d give fire to the institute with the canister. But since yesterday you happily return there, what miracles the math sub makes. You touch her buttock, she meows, you pee on the Pythagorean Theorem. Scholars, they’re coerced such that Vitali’s Pierino is an aristocratic figure. To what end the student protests? Sodomized in a gym affair, the sixty-eight is a question, but the subsequent number, it stays on your head. The freaks wanted to change the world, those of my world want to look at porn mags in diminished kiosks and expose more tits than the fleets in the Port of Livorno. How many believe in ‘68 and how many see sex in everything? ’68? Eh . . . Sex in everything? Eeeeeeeh! How many believe in ‘68 and how many see sex in everything? ’68? Eh . . . Sex in everything? Eeeeeeeh! In ’68 you muddied yourself at Woodstock, in 2008 Woodcock muddied you. There’s a new poster at the sex shop, “You’ll pay dearly, you’ll pay everything!” Beauty, in the right clubs downtown, you dance with the pretty boys of the moment. They’ll tell you not to prostitute yourself but to go to bed fairly paid in advance. At 13 years you already had a relationship of sex in a parental-control chat with one who really offends you, and not even y’all who have the Norton on. In Prague winter spreads, the plague of modern man is spending the night with eyes on the screen to become adult with a click on “Confirm.” ’68? Sex in everything? ’68? Sex in everything? [Outro: Audience, Michele Kalamera, Melissa Maccari, Caparezza] Break the guitar! Break the guitar! Break the guitar! Break the guitar! *The sound of a broken guitar* The discharge of the amplifier generated a space-time hole from which appeared a young girl from 1968 . . . But, but where am I? You’re not Jimi Hendrix! Aren’t you a little too young for LSD? Well, my name is Caparezza. Ah, my name is Ilaria . . . (Ilaria, Ilaria . . .) English translation © 2021 Dennis Criteser Le dimensione del mio caos (The Dimensions of My Chaos) is Caparezza's fourth album, conceived of as a sonic novel that tells the story of Ilaria, a hippie girl from 1968 who is cast into the present via a space-time hole. Caparezza falls in love with her, but she marries Carneade, head of a political front who ends up winning the election with 100% of the votes by way of building a useless spaceport in Puglia. Caparezza meets a manual laborer who, while Caparezza is arrested and condemned to hard labor, goes on to create a second space-time hole which transforms humans into bonobos in a more advanced state of evolution. The album was released at the same time as Caparezza's book Saghe mentali (Mental Sagas); the first three sections of the book discuss the songs of his first three albums and the fourth section is a complement to this fourth album. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
