Caltanissetta fa quattru quarteri -
Caltanissetta Has Four Districts

Caltanissetta fa quattru quarteri
La megliu giuvintù, li surfarari

La duminica su' tutti cu dinari
A lu luni 'nta la pirrera hannu a calari
A lu luni 'nta la pirrera hannu a calari

C'un tintu pani e 'na trista lumera
Tutta la simanedda hannu a passari
Tutta la simanedda hannu a passari

Sulfur mining in Sicily dates back to 900 BC, but expanded greatly in the Industrial Revolution, with Sicily becoming the world's largest supplier through the early 1900s. In a time of declining agricultural output, sulfur extraction became the economic backbone of the island, while at the same time destroying ecosystems and the bodies of the poor young "zolfatori" who had no other work prospects than to go down into the mines. In the 1800s, Caltanissetta had 275 mines employing 32,000 workers.

Caltanissetta has four districts.
The best young people, the sulfur miners.

On Sundays, everyone is in the money.
On Mondays, into the mine they must drop.
On Mondays, into the mine they must drop.

With hard bread and a sad lamp,
all week long must they pass,
all week long must they pass.

La voce della Sicilia (The Voice of Sicily) was Balistreri's first album, released in 1967. All but one of the songs are traditional Sicilian folk songs.
