Marzo: nu pòco chiòve e n'atu ppòco stracqua... Tòrna a chiòvere, schiòve... ride 'o sóle cu ll'acqua. Mo nu ciélo celèste, mo n'aria cupa e néra... Mo, d' 'o viérno, 'e ttempèste, mo, n'aria 'e primmavèra... Marzo: nu pòco chiòve e n'atu ppòco stracqua... N'auciéllo freddigliuso, aspètta ch'èsce 'o sóle... 'Ncòpp' 'o tturrèno 'nfuso, suspirano 'e vviòle... Catarì, che vuó cchiù? 'Ntiénneme còre mio: Marzo, tu 'o ssaje, si' tu... e st'auciéllo, songh'io... Marzo: nu pòco chiòve e n'atu ppòco stracqua... Marzo, tu 'o ssaje, si' tu... e st'auciéllo, sòngh'io... Marzo: nu pòco chiòve e n'atu ppòco stracqua... 1892 - Mario Pasquale Costa (music), Salvatore Di Giacomo (lyrics) |
March – it rains a little, and after a little, it weakens . . . it returns to raining, it stops . . . the sun laughs with the water. Now a clear sky, now an atmosphere gloomy and black . . . now the storms of winter, now the air of spring . . . March - it rains a little, and after a little, it weakens . . . A bird sensitive to the cold waits for the sun to come out . . . on the wet earth, the violets sigh . . . Catherine, what more do you want? Understand me, my sweetheart: March, you know, is you . . . and this bird is me . . . March, it rains a little, and after a little, it weakens . . . March, you know, is you . . . and this bird is me . . . March, it rains a little, and after a little, it weakens . . . English translation © 2023 Dennis Criteser Canzone napoletana piccola enciclopedia ("Neapolitan Song Tiny Encyclopedia") was published in 2015, collecting into six CDs 80 tracks of traditional Neapolitan songs that Massimo Ranieri recorded in collaboration with producer Mauro Pagani. The arrangements are fresh with a contemporary appeal and Ranieri's voice is, as always, passionate and full of life. Pagani is a multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of the influential progressive rock band PFM, and is also well-known for producing Creuza de mä, Fabrizio De André's 1983 world fusion masterpiece. The Neapolitan Song tradition dates back centuries, but the classic period began in the 1830s. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
