Chi tene 'o mare - Whoever Has the Sea

Chi tene 'o mare
S'accorge 'e tutto chello che succede
Po' sta' luntano
E te fa senti' comme coce
Chi tene 'o mare 'o ssaje
Porta 'na croce

Chi tene 'o mare cammina
C''a vocca salata
Chi tene 'o mare 'o ssape ca
È fesso e cuntento
Chi tene 'o mare 'o ssaje
Nun tene niente

"Chi tene 'o mare" became, according to Daniele's official website, "one of the most universal portraits of the Neapolitan people." The sax player is James Senese in whose band, Napoli Centrale, Daniele played bass prior to the release of this second album. Senese has been a musical fixture of Naples since the 1960s.

Whoever has the sea
notices everything that happens
then stays far away
and makes you feel how it burns.
Whoever has the sea, you know,
carries a cross.

Whoever has the sea walks
with a salty mouth.
Whoever has the sea knows that
he is a sucker and content.
Whoever has the sea, you know,
doesn’t have anything.

Pino Daniele was Daniele's second album, released in 1979. The song “Je so' pazzo” became a radio hit and brought wider recognition to Daniele.
