Gesù Gesù, quanto amore Gesù Gesù, quanto bene Gesù Gesù, io sono fortunato Ad avere una persona come te Gesù Gesù, quanto amore Gesù Gesù, quanto bene Gesù Gesù, l'amore è ritornato L'amore è ancora qui vicino a me Io e te, Maria © 1973 Piero Ciampi, Gianni Marchetti |
I wander around in the night, making soliloquies. Sometimes under a bridge I write a poem, Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria . . . and I whistle a melody that an old musician listens to with patience and then doesn’t go away, Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria . . . Jesus, Jesus, so much love, Jesus, Jesus, so much good. Jesus, Jesus, love has gone, Jesus, Jesus, I’m a drifter without her. I’m dressed I don’t know how, my pants inside out, my right leg doesn’t work, whoever encounters me runs off. Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria . . . I go to bed with a sweater and nothing matters to me. If my head doesn’t work it’s because you went away. Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria Maria . . . Jesus, Jesus, so much love, Jesus, Jesus, so much good. Jesus, Jesus, I am lucky to have a person like you. Jesus, Jesus, so much love, Jesus, Jesus, so much good. Jesus, Jesus, love has returned, love is still here close to me. I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
