It’s true, believe me it happened, at night up on a bridge, watching the dark water with the damned desire to take a dive down. All of a sudden, someone behind me, maybe an angel dressed as a passerby, carried me away, talking to me this way . . . Marvelous, but how come you don’t realize how much the world is marvelous? Marvelous, even your pain can heal, then marvelous. But look around you, what gifts they’ve made for you: they invented the sea for you. You say you don’t have anything, does the sun seem like nothing! Life . . . love . . . Marvelous the goodness of a woman who loves only you, marvelous. The light of a morning, the embrace of a friend, the face of a child, marvelous, marvelous, marvelous, marvelous . . . Marvelous, but look around you, what gifts they’ve made for you: they invented the sea for you. You say you don’t have anything, does the sun seem like nothing! Life . . . love . . . Marvelous the goodness of a woman who loves only you. The night was over and I heard you still. Flavor of life, marvelous, marvelous, marvelous, marvelous, marvelous. English translation © 2023 Dennis Criteser "Meraviglioso" was the first single released upon Modugno's return to the RCA Italia label, which he had left in 1956. The song didn't get much attention until it was released in a new arrangement in 1971. It became one of Modugno's most celebrated and popular songs. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
