Dance on the velvet, on the crystal of your least good time and someone with you. Dance on the ancient ashes, on the vanished shadows and someone with you. If your face disappears from the portrait, it’s that perhaps you’re learning to walk. Dance in your house, in the grasses and the smell of winter and someone with you. Dance, pretty woman, little woman, distortions of time and someone with you. On the light that smashed Florence in half, but let’s let the sky know what it knows. You, dance on the suffering and the dance will waste away. We let the sky know what it knows, dance on the little luck, on the fields at the moon and the evil it does. Dance, and the more clarity and modesty and the less anger and the more love, it’s already something that goes. Returning from the other part of the sea and the sky, you could truly embrace Europe, and instead you foster your sorrows to keep them with you. Dance, on your road that dances, on your house that dances, and if you can’t do more, dance on the velvet, on the crystal of your least good time and someone with you. Dance on the ancient ashes, on the vanished shadows and someone with you. Dance on your life that dances, on everything that’s missing. If you can’t do more, oh yes, dance on everything that’s missing, dance. English translation © 2020 Dennis Criteser Danza was Mia Martini's ninth album. All of the songs were written by Ivano Fossati, with whom Martini had a long and very difficult romantic relationship, ultimately one that was destroyed by Fossati's jealousy and led to Martini's withdrawal from the recording world for three years. Their creative collaboration, however, spawned some great songs. |
I began exploring Italian popular songs as part of learning Italian. Here are my translations for some of my favorite "canzoni" by Italian singers, songwriters, and bands whose work I admire. It's a work in progress that can serve as a curated introduction to Italian popular music, with an emphasis on the 1950s through the 1990s. If you speak Italian, send me a message if you see lyrics I've misunderstood.
