Donna - Woman

Donne piccole come stelle
C'è qualcuno le vuole belle
Donna solo per qualche giorno
Poi ti trattano come un porno

Donne piccole e violentate
Molte quelle delle borgate
Ma quegli uomini sono duri
Quelli godono come muli

Donna come l'acqua di mare
Chi si bagna vuole anche il sole
Chi la vuole per una notte
C'è chi invece la prende a botte

Donna come un mazzo di fiori
Quando è sola ti fanno fuori
Donna, cosa succederà
Quando a casa non tornerà?

Donna, fatti saltare addosso
In quella strada nessuno passa

Donna © 1987 Enzo Gragnaniello

Enzo Gragnanielle wrote "Donna" for Mia Martini after hearing her sing in a small club in Naples in 1987. Martini had withdrawn from touring and recording in 1984 for various painful reasons both personal and professional. Gragnaniello was blown away by Martini's intensity and, thus inspired, wrote the song in one sitting. He was an important influence in getting her to return to the stage and the studio in 1989. Martini said that the song "describes not just a single type of woman, it talks of various violations that are committed on them, and not only physical ones. As the great Lennon said: woman is the nigger of the world. Woman is a guilty conscience, she is the mother. The woman is she who must understand, she is the link, she is that balance . . .; woman is folly, temptation, woman is the doubt but also the solution. I find myself in this lyric and I feel it because I experienced abuse, both as an artist and as a woman."

Women, small like stars –
there’s someone who wants them good looking.
Woman only for a few days,
then they treat you like porn.

Women, small and raped,
many of them of the villages.
But those men are hard,
they take enjoyment like mules.

Woman like the water of the sea,
whoever gets wet also wants the sun,
whoever wants her for a night,
there’s also one instead who beats her up.

Woman like a bunch of flowers,
when she is alone they take you out.
Woman, what will happen
when she doesn’t return home?

Woman, accept you'll get jumped on
in that street no one passes.
Woman, accept you'll get tied to a pole
and your hands will hurt.

Woman who feels no pain
when the cold arrives in his heart.
That one, now, he has no more time,
and he left, the wind blowing.

Woman like the water of the sea,
whoever gets wet also wants the sun,
whoever wants her for a night,
there’s also one who beats her up.

Woman like a bunch of flowers,
when you’re alone they take you out.
Woman, what will happen
when you don’t return home?
