Faves - Gabriella Ferri

One can trace the Roman popular song tradition back to the late Medieval/early Renaissance, but the modern canzone romana tradition is often marked with the initiation of an annual song competition in 1891, as part of the celebration activities for St. John's Eve, to identify the best Roman song. One notable song form, dating back to at least the 18th century, is the stornello, which were often improvised in games of rhyme or insult. The poet Giggi Zanazzo, also a scholar of Roman music traditions, described the stornello as "a sigh of love, an accent of hatred, and a whim of immagination," adopted by everyday Romans from the streets to the taverns, from wedding banquets to balconies. They were also adopted by prisoners to communicate their sorrows to the outside world. Other songs in the canzone romana tradition include love serenades, songs of tragedy, songs about current events, and songs about criminality.
