Passione - Passion

Cchiù luntana me staje,
Cchiù vicina te sento.
Chi sà a chistu mumento
Tu a che pienze? Che faje?

Tu m'hê miso 'int' ê vvene
'Nu veleno ca è doce.
Nun me pesa 'sta croce
Ca trascino pe' tte!

Te voglio, te penzo,
Te chiammo!
Te veco, te sento,
Te sonno!

È 'n'anno,
Ce pienze ca è 'n'anno
Ca 'st'uocchie nun ponno
Cchiù pace truvà?

E cammino, cammino,
Ma nun saccio addò vaco!
I' stò sempe 'mbriaco
E nun bevo maje vino.

Aggio fatto 'nu vuto
 Madonna d' 'a Neve:
Si me passa 'sta freva,
Oro e pperle lle dò!

Te voglio, te penzo,
Te chiammo!
Te veco, te sento,
Te sonno!

È 'n'anno,
Ce pienze ca è 'n'anno
Ca 'st'uocchie nun ponno
Cchiù pace truvà?

È 'n'anno,
Ce pienze ca è 'n'anno
Ca 'st'uocchie nun ponno
Cchiù pace truvà?

Lyric by Libero Bovio, music by Ernesto Tagliaferri and Nicola Valente, 1934

"Passione" is one of the most famous Neapolitan songs of all time.

The further you are from me,
the closer I feel you to be.
Who knows in this moment
what you are thinking? What you are doing?

You’ve put into my veins
a sweet poison.
It’s not heavy this cross
that I drag along for you.

I want you, I think of you,
I call you!
I see you, I feel you,
I dream of you!

It’s been a year,
can you believe that it’s been a year
that these eyes can’t
find peace anymore?

And I walk, I walk
but I don’t know where I’m going.
I’m always drunk
and I never drink wine.

I made a votive offering
to the Madonna of the Snow:
if this fever passes,
gold and pearls shall I give Her!

I want you, I think of you,
I call you!
I see you, I feel you,
I dream of you!

It’s been a year,
can you believe that it’s been a year
that these eyes can’t
find peace anymore?

It’s been a year,
can you believe that it’s been a year
that these eyes can’t
find peace anymore?

The tradition of Neapolitan songs has its roots in the 13th century, and came into full bloom in the period from 1830-1950, when an annual song competition would honor the best song each year. Between 1963 and 1965, Roberto Murolo released a 12-album anthology of Neapolitan songs ranging from 1200 through the early 1960s. Volume 8 includes songs from 1925 to 1938.
